Theater Manager – Downtown in Traverse City, Michigan statetheatretc.org/about/theater-manager/Theater Manager State Theatre of Traverse City and Bijou by the Bay Theater Manager Position Description We are looking for a special person to run a very special movie theater, the likes of which is rarely found in these days of multiplexes and cine-malls. We seek a full time general manager for the State Theatre and Bijou by the Bay, two independent art house movie theaters run by Michael Moore in the beautiful northern Michigan community of Traverse City. The general manager oversees operation of the State Theater and Bijou by the Bay, owned and operated by the nonprofit Traverse City Film Festival. The successful candidate will be our first full-time general manager. The new general manager will participate in and lead the ongoing creation of this world-class historic movie palace which has existed on this site for nearly 100 years. We are looking for someone who has a great love of movies. Projection and booking experience are desired but not required. Knowledge of film history is a plus. As it is a movie theater, much of the work takes place on weekends, nights and holidays. The Traverse City Film Festival takes affirmative action to employ and advance in employment veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. Responsibilities: Oversee the excellent presentation of first-run and classic films Assist with selection and booking of films each week; coordinate print traffic and film inspection Schedule, set calendar and showtimes in coordination with the programmer and film booker Schedule and coordinate facility rentals and community partnership events Special event management, including logistics and prep, education events, holidays, film festivals and special screenings General management of the physical theater operations, plus IT, financial control and record-keeping, and purchasing of supplies and materials Oversee all marketing and PR efforts for the theater Serve as the public face of the theater, communicating with media and community groups Supervise, train, and oversee theater’s small paid staff and large volunteer staff Qualifications: We are looking for a person who believes in and is engaged in our mission, and is willing collaborate in building and growing the one of the “ten best art houses in the country” (USA Today). This person should exhibit exceptional judgment, be an excellent multi-tasker, extraordinarily well-organized, dedicated, efficient and communicative. She or he should have an understanding of and appreciation for the State Theatre, Bijou by the Bay, and the TCFF mission. Applicants should have: Ability to operate computerized and mechanical systems involved in theater operations (projection experience a plus) Demonstrated management ability in a context involving customer service and volunteer staff; experience with theater operation preferred Ability to create ads and marketing materials using appropriate software, including InDesign and PhotoShop Commitment to encouraging community involvement in cultural events and bringing in new and diverse audiences Ability to work a flexible schedule: weekend, nights and holidays are required Reports To: Executive director of the Traverse City Film Festival.
