Theatre Review: One Man, Two Guvnors at The Orchard Theatre, by Annabelle Jain I had seen a lot of adverts for One Man, Two Guvnors when it first came to the stage at The National Theatre. Its numerous award and rave reviews meant I was extremely excited when I saw that it was coming to the Orchard. Put simply this is one of the funniest shows I have seen, my husband was literally crying with laughter at points. Especially when it comes to the ad-libbing, the actors ability to improvise made the show and provided some of the funniest moments! (I was glad not to be sitting on the front few rows as audience participation was required!) Gavin Spokes plays Francis Henshall, the lead and the One Man referred to in the shows title who in his desperation to make a living (and get a meal!) takes on two jobs but neither Guvnor can find out about each other which is hard seeing as they are both staying at the same pub! Looking down the cast youd be forgiven for thinking you were reading the Eastenders credits as Shaun Williamson, Emma Barton and Jasmyn Banks all star but I would definitely say it was some of the less well knowns who had the most memorable performances. As well as the amazing acting I found myself excited for the musical interludes during set changes with the comical songs, skiffle bands and out there dancing. The play was literally non stop entertainment from beginning to end. One man, Two Guvnors is a brilliant mix of satire, slapstick, songs and one-liners which results in a laugh out loud play which I can not only recommend but which I am very tempted to go and watch again!
