Theatremask Productions Jesus Christ Superstar - Auditions Saturday 15th February 2014 ___________________________________________________ A note from the Musical Director: Labelled a ‘rock opera’, many of the solos in this musical are very ad lib. and performed differently by each actor. I advise everyone who auditions to listen to as many different cast recordings of the show as possible and to not simply learn a song note-for-note from a specific recording. I recommend that you do your research and choose the best bits from each performance to create your own. There is so much opportunity for you to make the part your own. The examples included are for reference only, and are not the production team’s favourite performances. They have been chosen because they most resemble the structure of the score that we have. I look forward to meeting you all in February and working with you on this production. Good luck. ________________________________________________________________________ Judas Heaven On Their Minds • Whole song, with repeats, pages 7-15 • Repeat bars 103-110 four times times, with ad lib. lyrics on the 3rd and 4th times, as written Example: youtube/watch?v=Ed9tL_gmVcM Jesus Gethsemane • Whole song, pages 130-138 Example: youtube/watch?v=_QozXX7Ndrk Mary I Don’t Know How To Love Him • Whole song, pages 95-101 • Introduction - last 2 bars on page 94 • Vocal tacet, instrumental at bars 42-45 Example: youtube/watch?v=D3wQd9vuGnA 1 Pilate Pilate’s Dream • Whole song, pages 75-77 Example: youtube/watch?v=jFvutM5hu0c --AND-- Pilate and Christ • Start at bar 14, page 156 • End at bar 47, page 159 • The parts of Jesus and Annas will be sung in by the production team • Note that some sections are marked ‘Parlando’, meaning ‘spoken’ (listen to cast recordings for ideas) Example: youtube/watch?v=YULD0kRnWVk Caiaphus This Jesus Must Die • Start at bar 36, page 49 • Sing to the end of the song, page 55 • Please sing all solo lines, irrespective of the character labelled • Please sing all lines as the character of Chaiaphas (i.e. no need to change octave) Example: youtube/watch?v=7PnaPJQwN3w Annas Blood Money (Damned For All Time) • Start at bar 105, page 109 • Ending at bar 137, page 112 • Please sing both Annas and Caiaphas’s solo lines (acted as though Annas were singing all of them, i.e. no need to change octave) • The production team will sing in for Judas Example: youtu.be/UpIgnh8cHx0?t=3m17s Simon Simon Zealotes • Start at bar 17, page 63 • Please prepare to bar 88, page 70 • We may stop at bar 40 or 68, time dependent • In the chorus harmony sections (i.e. bars 21-28), please sing the melody (soprano line an octave down) Example: youtube/watch?v=VYfAIt1spGo 2 Peter Could We Start Again Please? • Whole song, pages 168-172 • Please sing both Mary and Peter’s solo lines (Mary’s down an octave) • Sing Peter’s line in the chorus’s (not Mary’s harmony) • Note the octave difference at bars 39-40 in chorus 2 compared to chorus 1 (23-24) • We may stop at bar 27, time dependent Example: youtube/watch?v=576XWaa1Irg Priests This Jesus Must Die • Start at bar 36, page 49 • Ending at bar 68 • Please sing all solo lines, irrespective of the character labelled • Use whichever octave best suits your voice (i.e. don’t strain to sing as high as Annas or as low as Caiaphas - the Priest sing in the middle octave) Example: youtube/watch?v=7PnaPJQwN3w Herod Herod’s Song (Pilate & Christ) • Start at bar 58, page 161 • Sing to the end of the song, page 167 Example: youtube/watch?v=qnErvJbov6I Soul Girls Superstar • Start at bar 69, page 209 • Finish at bar 84, page 210 --AND-- Simon Zealotes • Start at bar 17, page 63 • Finish at bar 40, page 64 • Sing either melody or a harmony line to bars 21-28 • Note that the harmony parts written in the score are incorrect compared to most cast recordings.
