Theismann: "Fully expect" RG3 starting in Week 1 RICHMOND--Joe Theismann says he “fully” anticipates Robert Griffin III will be the starting quarterback on Sept. 9 when the Redskins host the Eagles at FedEx Field. “If you ask Robert, he says he’s right on schedule,” Theismann said. “I fully expect him to him to be dressed on Monday night against the Philadelphia Eagles when the Redskins open their season. I would be very, very surprised if he’s not.” Theismann, who visited RG3 in Florida during the early stages of his rehab and again at Redskins Park during OTAs, made his comments Monday in Richmond at the grand opening of the Bon Secours Washington Redskins Training Center. The $10 million facility will host training camp beginning July 25. Theismann also revealed that he’s had discussions with Griffin – quarterback to quarterback – about the importance of self preservation. “You hear other people talk about, ‘He shouldn’t do this, he shouldn’t do that,’” Theismann said. “The only thing he’s going to have to do is understand that if it’s third down and 15, and he can only pick up 12 yards, take the 12 yards and go back and start over.” “Robert has such a win-win mentality, that to him, every endeavor in life is about winning,” he added. “And what we’ve talked about is, how do you define wins? Wins are running out of bounds so that you can take another snap. Wins are getting down to you don’t take that unnecessary hit.” Theismann said Griffin has come to understand his importance to the Redskins’ aspirations. “We both laugh a little about how people always want to give Robert advice,” Theismann continued. "He’s done quite well. He’s a Heisman Trophy winner. He’s a rookie of the year. He’s done a lot of things a lot of guys only dream about doing.” He continued: “From Robert’s perspective, he knows this football team is a football team that has a chance to contend when he’s on the field. No offense to Kirk [Cousins]; Kirk’s a heck of a football player. He’s different. He’s not Robert. Robert brings a different element to the game.”
