Theme of the week: Froggies (1-2 years): Language and communication: Listening, language, and the way we learn INTEREST and quotes We use language to : • communicate • develop our thought processes • learn and gain knowledge A child’s experience at home can have a profound effect on the way and speed at which his language develops. Listen when your child talks, and answer him intelligently. Take time to hold a conversation with him and discussing things rather than simply answering him in one sentence. Your baby will also benefit from your conversations, even if he doesn’t fully understand everything. The single most common cause if speech difficulties in early childhood is hearing loss. NB! make sure that your child can hear. Milestones vary... A three year old has the potential vocabulary of 10 000 words, many have a vocabulary of 200 words. Enrich your child’s potential vocabulary! Debbie Tanner, speech therapist. Help your child to choose the correct words without necessarily correcting him. When he says `mommy up`, you could reply, `do you want mommy to pick you up?` or you could simply repeat his words using the right sentence structure.
