Then I perceived that God had not sent him at all, but that he pronounced this prophecy against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him. Nehemiah 6:12 Every child of God has the Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit lives inside the spirit of the believer and not outside. That means God wants to lead His children through the Spirit within us. When someone tells you that God has given them a word for you, don’t immediately jump to a conclusion that God had indeed spoken. Learn to rightly judge the prophetic words you hear. In our text, we note an example of a person rightly judging a word someone had given him. Nehemiah had received a word purported to be from God, asking Him to stop what he was doing. It was a word that sought to put a lot of fear into him concerning what his enemies were planning to do to him. Although the word fed into his fears, when Nehemiah heard it, he was able to discern that it did not come from God. He was able to do that by considering the mission that Lord had given him to accomplish against this new prophecy that was seeking to stop him through fear. Of course, God speaks to us through people but any word that continuously plants seed of fear in us cannot be of God. So any time a ‘prophet’ gives you a word of prophecy, weigh it against God’s word and God’s dealings with you in the past. Remember, God will never contradict His Word, nor will He give you a word that freezes you with fear. God has not given us the spirit of fear but of love, of power and a sound mind. We live by faith and not by fear.
