Then Jesus said to his disciples, If anyone would come after me - TopicsExpress

Then Jesus said to his disciples, If anyone would come after me that person must deny self and take up their cross and follow me. - Matthew 16:24 The announcement by Jesus of his impending suffering and death is closely tied to what it means to follow Jesus as a disciple. 1 John 2:6 tells us: Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. This does not mean we go around looking for a cross to bear or that we call every hardship that comes our way our cross to bear. Nor should this text ever be used to normalize or justify unjust abuse or oppression. Quite the opposite, cross-bearing is something to choose out of willing obedience above our own self-interest. When we do this our life with Christ is enriched, and it reveals a depth of courage and obedience born of love and compassion, as did Christs obedience to his Father.
