Then & Now: #throwbackthursday This week is an extra special week to be looking back as we celebrate 25 Years Into the Thick Happy Birthday to our underground mine experience Into the Thick which celebrates its 25th anniversary this month. The Black Country was famous for the Staffordshire Thick Coal, which lay beneath much of the area. The coal occurred in seams of up to 10 metres thick, far bigger than anywhere else in Britain. Our underground mine lies at the centre of our colliery display, it is a modern construction built in 1989, designed to give visitors an experience that is both realistic and, most importantly, safe – something that very few Black Country Mines could lay claim to. It is a drift mine with a sloping tunnel down, which you can walk into a maze of roadways and working areas to experience the underground conditions in a safe, yet realistic way. See pictures below of the Mine under construction. Celebrating its 25th birthday and with over 4 million visitors since it opened, our mine offers an authentic insight into how coal was mined in the Black Country during the mid-nineteenth century and visitors can experience what it was like to be a coal miner during this time - the height of the Industrial Revolution, when the demand for this essential fuel seemed insatiable. So Mind yer ed!. Come and take a trip with Lija Wedge into the world of an 1850s Black Country coalminer.
