Then again, what did we think we could expect from somebody who promised to uphold transparency in government in a concrete form, by endorsing a freedom of information lawthat would give citizens access, as a matter of right, to details of most transactions of the government? Candidate Aquino won partly because of this pledge, but after more than four years in office, he has yet to deliver. An FOI law would also make it easier for journalists to gather data for their reports, instead of resorting to risky measures to expose corrupt or inept officials. But of course, Mr. Aquino, who has no love lost for members of the media—especially critics who are out to sabotage his campaign of reform as he claims—does not appreciate this at all. In the end we realize, as we should have done from the start, that this administration has yet to live all the lofty virtues it goes around the world proclaiming. We have a holier-than-thou leader, incapable of empathy, who says one thing and does yet another. That’s context for you.
