“Then they asked him, ‘What must we do to do the works God - TopicsExpress

“Then they asked him, ‘What must we do to do the works God requires?’ Jesus answered, ‘The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent’ ” (John 6:28). Jesus had fed the five thousand and He and His disciples were on the other side of the Sea of Galilee. The crowd He had fed followed Him there and He gave them extensive teaching. They asked Jesus a question, which is the question for all time. They wanted to know what they were to do to satisfy God’s requirements. That is still the most important question anyone can ask. Religion has its answers that are based on our human performance. These questioners had been brought up to obey the Ten Commandments and the hundreds of laws the religious leaders had added to them. They probably expected Jesus to reinforce their religious laws. He didn’t. He gave the answer that set them and us free. Instead of asking that we perform our religious duties, He gave another option. He had come to satisfy the religious requirements that were beyond our ability. He came to live the perfect life we couldn’t live. The one thing He asked, that would satisfy what God requires of us, is that we believe in Him. I can’t be perfect. When I became a Christian it was already too late. I had already failed. However, I can believe in Him. When I believe in Jesus I have done the one thing God asks me to do. The good news is that believing in Jesus changes me into another person. I am transformed and given a new nature. That nature isn’t something we earn by our efforts, it is given to us because we believe in Him. Our struggle to be good enough is over because He was good enough. We can rest in who He is and what He did. That’s the best news anyone has ever heard!
