Theology Thursday by Debbie Vacek Set a guard over my mouth, Lord. Watch over the door of my lips. Psalm 141:3 Silence can speak volumes. It can be very convicting. Did you (as I did) have a father who could correct you without a word being said? It was the look! But that would be a topic for another time! Regarding the tongue issue, I have lately been convicted to listen more and talk less. I am learning that often my impulse is a desire to entertain the person with whom I am talking or step in and offer a solution or advice where I wasnt being asked to give one! But what has been revealed to me is that if I ask God to make me a positive sounding board, I truly learn more about the person that is talking to me and begin to care less and less about making my points! Strength and calm and clarity can grow when one is silent. I heard it said once, We can listen someone into being. WOW! Try being a good listener today. Prayer: Father, thank you for the example of Jesus obedience and constraint as He suffered for us...give us the strength to follow His example and not to speak when we should be listening, especially listening for Your voice. In Christs name, Amen.
