There are 4 abandoned cemeteries in Easton- Gilbertown, Center Street, Lyon and Den Road. Basically that means there is no record of an owner; or where the last known owner is deceased; the maintenance company has disband or dissolved; no burials in many (think 40) years…. By law the town had to cut the grass and could do nothing about the broken headstones, the trees that were uprooting them or fix any damage or other maintenance In 2007 the town clerk began the paperwork and research to have the state grant the town ownership. In February 2010 it passed. Our first workday was in April 2010. Every month from April-November about 5-10 people meet and work in the cemeteries, I am going to share with you the work that has been done and interesting facts about these cemeteries. I hope you enjoy it. Center Street Cemetery is actually to the left of Aspetuck Cemetery which is across the street from Gilbertown Cemetery (Mud Hole entrance). Most people believe it’s all one (Aspetuck) cemetery. This is a short video of only a few “before and after pictures” In 2007 the headstones were cleaned using a “bio wash” The material of the stone made a big difference on the outcome. It takes several months to work and will continue to work for several years. Other then that, all the restoration in these pictures were done in the first year 2010. BTW no town money has been used on any of the restoration. We volunteer our time and materials are from grants or donated. Paul Newman was in the town hall and heard what we were planning if we got ownership. Apparently he wrote a check which was our first donation. Every year the Newman Foundation has generously made a donation
