There are a few ways to look at this: - Wow - look at all the idiots in the suburbs! - Yikes! We dodged a bullet! - See? The people downtown *are* elitist! Those are backward ways of looking at it, I think. Look where the green is - almost exactly following the subway lines. Wheres the blue? In the part of town with some of the best transit, most walkable neighbourhoods, lower unemployment, and higher income. And the red? Some of the worst transit in the city - packed buses that dont always come regularly, no streetcars, no subways. Biking in those areas is taking ones life into ones own hands, and walking to the store to grab a few groceries isnt really an option for many either. A look at this map (3.bp.blogspot/-CB6rnmUNRmc/UGR8LxvBBYI/AAAAAAAAA3M/ZIIftoGpm74/s1600/Map.png) shows that this is having an impact in terms of rates of diabetes. Whether or not its true I think that somehow, the people in those red zones feel that the usual sorts of leadership we have in the city is what maintains the status quo. They feel that something different is needed to get them what they need. People like the Ford family represent *something* different and someone that isnt just different but aggressively interested in making necessary changes happen. Whether its true or not, I think thats why we have the election results map we do. And until we start addressing the issues our suburbs are having, I expect well continue to see maps like this.
