“There are far, far better things ahead than any we leave behind.” - C.S. Lewis. If you always do what youve always done, youll always get what youve always gotten. This quote is attributed to numerous people, but it is generally accepted that Mark Twain was the first to use it. Regardless of attribution, it is the truth contained in it that makes the quote so memorable. One cannot hold on to the old and expect, realistically, to embrace that which is new. Though change and transition is inevitable, it is, potentially, painful. We grasp the old tightly, because even if it is not serving us well, it is comfortable. People are dying on the hills of mediocrity (Spiritually, and in every other realm), because the mountains of greatness seem too high for them. Ultimately, fear of the future, is representative of a general lack of faith. We have a future that has been established for us. It will take death - the most fearful of all transitions - to make heaven possible. In this life, though, there are many small funerals we should preside over. We must be willing bury the old things in order to realize the new lives that transition makes possible. Fear not! is the encouragement we receive from our savior. Of what are you afraid? What old habits are you keeping on life support, because you are to afraid to move forward? The new has come! Will you embrace it, or will you grasp the old - with white knuckles - because you are imprisoned by fear of what might happen if you change? Lord, give us both the courage and the energy to break loose from the inertia to which we are so prone. Let us, also, serve as an encouragement to others who are stagnated by their fear of embracing a brighter future. Help us to trust you enough to let go of the things that hold us back from the destinies for which you have created us. Amen and amen. - HW Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. (II Corinthians 5:17)
