There are good days and there days that steal your breath. Today was not a good day. In a nutshell, I have a bone infection in my left foot and probably have had it for some time now. I have a non union and the reason this thing has not healed is because there was an infection all along, probably going back to march or early april. The antibiotics have beaten it back but it will continue to come back unless I do the following: I will need to have surgery in 2 weeks to remove all of the hardware and at the same time they will remove any damaged bone. I will be put in a non weightbearing cast and take IV antibiotics for at least 6 weeks. Then, you wait a month to see if the infection comes back. If at that time I am infection free, I will have another surgery to reconstruct the affected area and be non weight bearing again. It will be a giant shit sandwich. So heres the thing. In order to pass through a tunnel you have to go through a lot of darkness. I have often thought of these 10 surgeries as being in a dark tunnel trying to find my way to the other side. Sometimes you see a glimpse of light but its just out of reach. Other times you are swallowed up by the dark. But, you still have to find your way to the other side. Today, I may not have gotten good news, but it was progress, and a necessary step towards the light. At least I know what is wrong and what now needs to be done. I choose to count my blessings instead of shake my fist at the sky. I had better start counting because I have a lot to be thankful for. If you ever think something is wrong, it probably is.
