There are good priests, good cops, and there might even be good politicians, although I have yet to see one. However I hold out hope. It takes a special breed of people to do any of those jobs,requiring, generally,some negative personality traits by societys standards to perform well. Example: To be a successful priest you have to forgo intimacy,an integral part of our makeup, while still needing to nurture, console, and communicate regularly with the public. To be a successful cop you are charged with arresting or fining your fellow citizens who may be decent people just running late to an appointment. Some cops are sympathetic but the ones often lauded with their ranks seem to enjoy this task. Politicians, in their ego-driven frenzy for power and prestige, often say anything and do anything for their interests versus their constituents. I believe our failings as a society in many ways is due to the expectations and requirements, implied or assumed, we have established over time. Priests should be able to marry. Police should be helpers first and only be after violent criminals. Politicians should be low-paid, short-term positions having no special privileges or exemptions. Then we will have people doing more of the right things for the right reasons.
