There are many CA teachers like myself who lobbied for years for CTA to give about 40% of CTA political donations to Republican candidates or the Republican Party. Largely it didnt happen because of a fear among Republicans that the Union would control the Republican Party. Although the amount of donations is rather small in comparison to what is donated to Democrats, that will be something to watch with the possible inherent influence that comes with donations. The Double-Whammy to Republican Union Members is their Dues money goes to Democrats and then they have to spend More of Their Own Money to equate, let alone offset, their money given unwillingly to Democrats. Perhaps this will bring foward the REAL PROBLEM! Unions should not be spending members DUES in Politics! The founding principle and rationale of unions was to bargain for members in their WORKPLACE. The MEMBERS should have their DUES REDUCED to spend their Own Money on Candidates and Parties of Their Own Choosing. In the last 40 years, unions dues spending on politics has shifted the POWER of Governing over the entire state/country from the PEOPLE to >>>UNION LEADERS. This is not a healthy part of how a Democratic Republic Should work. It takes away the Power of the People, dilutes the power of voters, does not Represent the Will of the People, but represents the View of a SELECT FEW. This is not Characteristic of a Healthy Functioning Democratic Republic. It seems there are some New Rules Needed to Curb the Unjust Power of the Unions. Diane Lenning, Ed.M./ J.D.
