There are many dad roles I love in movies. So it is difficult to choose one in particular as a favourite. However, there wasnt anything like this one, where Mohanlal exceedingly did the role to perfection. As a prodigal son of a rich man whose wife deserted him and their son at a very young age, he hates women and mothers in particular. Yet out of an experience of sharing some time with the children of his drink-buddy, he toys with the idea of getting a child from a surrogate mother through artificial insemination. Partly adapted based on the Korean movie The surrogate mother, Sibi Malayil, the director and Lohitadas, the script writer combined to make one of the best movies in malayalam in 1989, after their success of Kireedom (Gardish). The last scene in particular is quite moving as Mohanlal decides to hand over the child to the surrogate mother, who could not bear parting with the infant, despite the contract to do so. Yet he begs for one favour from her husband, to allow his son to do his last rites. He turns towards his elderly maid then and asks her if he could call her mom. Later, Sukumari, the veteran actress who did the role of the maid, Maggi, said both of them were overwhelmed during the shooting of that scene. Aptly named Dasharatham, after the father who did a penance (Putrakaameshti) to get his son Ram only to lose him for Vanvaas at a time he most wanted to be with him, this movie was a blockbuster in 1989 and surprisingly was not remade into other languages unlike many of the other movies. It was dubbed in Marathi though as Maaza Mulaga. So here is the climax scene from the movie, on fathers day. Kishore youtu.be/dly7BfP9rfE
