There are many people who are critical of modern police. Whether they say we are too militarized or that we trample civil liberties or that we violate the Constitution, they are all critical. Implied in their criticism there is some type of feeling that there used to be good old days when cops didnt do these things. Yet when I talk to people who were in law enforcement 30, 40 or 50 years ago I hear not stories of protecting Civil Liberties but instead stories of randomly beating guys with bad attitudes, searching without probable cause, and generally behaving badly. Even granting that these are sometimes war stories that are exaggerated, I still happen to feel that in general cops today are smarter, more restrained, more conscious of peoples genuine rights, etc. --AD
