There are many reasons why over 70% of American churches are either dying or plateaued. But there is one that I see quite often: many churches are satisfied with the status quo. They cant see past the end of their nose and are not really concerned about it. They are comfortable in their business as usual posture and quickly become defensive if anyone suggests that something is wrong. These churches usually have power groups that run things and they enjoy riding in the front seat even though the car is running out of gas. The requirements for membership in a status quo church are very easy: Attend church one, may be twice on Sunday, live a half-way moral life through the week and you are assured of going to heaven. But they need to change a few verses. They should preach Broad is the way to leads to heaven and many are finding it. And again, Assert yourself, follow the Lord if it is convenient, God didnt mean for you to deny yourself of all the good things that are in this world. This status quo gospel has no place for self-denial, or self-sacrifice. It actually fosters a mutual conspiracy. Everyone in the church puts on a mask and they all play church, pat themselves on the back, and brag about what a great church they have. No one has the courage to stand up and say, Look, something is wrong. We need to get on our face before God and pray for a revival. This is why the churches of America are dying. We give only lip service to the Word of God and have oped for the American illusion that you can have blessings without sacrifice. God have mercy on us and open our eyes! We are all dressed up and going nowhere.
