There are more than 300,000 sunflowers in bloom on Route 1 South heading towards Longwood Gardens! A field of gold in scenic Brandywine Valley... As part of their stewardship practices, they have planted more than 300,000 sunflowers along Route 1. Many don’t realize that they practice crop rotation in their fields planting sunflowers, corn, soybeans, and sorghum to maintain soil and crop health. When the flowers fade and the seeds ripen, they’re harvested by a local farmer, processed, and sold locally as bird feed. This effort is one example of their commitment to local, sustainable agriculture. Here are more sunflower facts: The field is 18 acres About 24,000 seeds planted per acre Assuming a 90% germination rate (average for sunflowers), there should be 388,800 sunflowers! Bloom is expected to last about 2 weeks (possibly a little longer)
