There are only two things you really need to know about the Academy Awards: that Citizen Kane didnt win the Oscar for best picture, and that Driving Miss Daisy did, wrote critic Mark Kermode in The Observer. Alfred Hitchcock was never named best director; nor was Charlie Chaplin, Howard Hawks or Stanley Kubrick. Still, theres something compelling about the Academy Awards that nothing else can match; the frocks, the spectacle, the greed, the smug self-congratulation of it all. And the fact that there are some pretty good films around made by committed, sometimes inspiring film-makers and, when it comes down to it, its nice to see people grinning happily over prizes.
