There are over 55 classrooms in the 9-12 building over the contractual limit of 32 students in a classroom. I actually decreased the number of classes just to be sure the data is not considered to be false. The real number of classrooms that are overcrowded may actually be higher. Why did this occur when the adminsitration has been saying that they have been preparing the plans for this reinvention plan for 3 years? Does not seem to me that they planned well enough. What will be their remedy to the situation? Legally, HPS either has to pay each teacher $1000 extra that has an overcrowded classroom (so that is at least $55,000. Lets do the math. They say the switch saved them $200,000 now lets subtract $55,000 and we are left with a grand total of $145,000 saved to disrupt an entire community) Now, the alternative to paying each teacher $1000 is to hire a para pro for the classroom. How much more would that actually cost HPS to do? How much money will they really save with this reinvention plan? Remember, there is still overcrowding in other grades as well. This is JUST the 9-12 grades. Lets forget about the finances for now. Lets look at the more important fact that is plain and simple and THE MOST IMPORTANT FACT OF ALL: OVERCROWDING OF CLASSROOMS LEADS TO POORER STUDENT PERFORMANCE AND LOWER TEST SCORES. Three years of planning and the school board and adminstration has successfully created an environment that directly leads to poorer student performance. But what the heck, they saved a few dollars so they can stay millions and millions of dollars in the black. Great job. Yep, you did not lay off any employees, nope, not at all. The school board just allowed teacher after teacher, employee after employee, to leave HPS for sunnier shores and did not care to replace them. They carried this way to far and now look at the results of their experienced leadership. Time for an overhaul of our school board. Time for leadership that is more interested in enhancing our childrens education then in showing how well they can save money. I am voting for Craig Anderson, Julie Bureau, Doug Needham and Mark Perry come the November election. www2.ed.gov/offices/OESE/archives/inits/construction/impact2.html
