There are people in Jordan who think (or say) that Syria was quite a better place to live than Jordan. However, truth be told, those people are dreamers of the first order. Syria has never had higher living standards than Jordan; its because our currency is (the Jordan Dinar) buys more US Dollars than the Syrian Lira; rather, it is because Jordans economy is freer than Syrias economy. True, Syria has self-sufficiency at wheat and very low international debt; but Syrians always flocked to Jordan and Lebanon for work and life; you never heard about Jordanians or Lebanese going to Syria! In short, socialism (as Syria is governed by) is a failure; and command economies never produce good living standards. Despite production of wheat and so on; Syria could not produce prosperity nor gravitate people or resolve its unemployment woes. In that sense, Syria was at least 10 years behind Jordan at IT/ICT and the rest of it. Syria may not be better off under civil war; but it should remind our policy makers that freer economies reduce the likelihood of civil war.
