There are several large cities in America, including New York and Washington, DC, that do not have and will not allow Walmart in their cities. They cite the low wages and issues relating to how Walmart undercuts the markets by selling goods made with cheap labor. While in New York a couple of weeks ago I tried to find a Walmart and discovered that the nearest Walmart was in Newark, New Jersey. In Memphis, we have Walmarts and Family Dollar stores on every other corner. Now I am not complaining , because there are many families that survive off these low cost consumer goods. They need discount stores in order to make it . However instead of creating more discount stores, we should be focused on creating better jobs and come cashflow within this city so that people can afford better quality gods and services. I have always said that when you see pawn shops, used tire stores, Dollar Stores, and Title Loan shops every time you turn a corner, that is a city in trouble. We have more here than any other place in the country. We can dig out of this hole, if we open the economic discussion to more than just a privileged few.
