There are several veterans memorials across New York City. Cal Snyder is a historian who specializes in New York war memorials. All of our memorials seek to capture something essential about the American character. Snyder took Fox 5 News on a tour of some of the memorials located in Battery Park in Lower Manhattan. One is the American Merchant Mariners Memorial. Its a sculpture based on a photograph taken as mariners were holding onto their sinking vessel during World War II. Many, many years later the photograph resurfaced and it became the inspiration for this memorial, Snyder says. The Korean War Veterans Memorial is located across Battery Park. At the center is a 15-food black granite sculpture called The Universal Soldier. In the base of the sculpture are the flags of the nations that served in the Korean Conflict, Snyder says. At the southern end of Battery Park is the East Coast Memorial, a bronze sculpture of an eagle laying a crest at sea and several pieces of stone with the names of thousands of Americans who died during World War II. All that remains are ethces in stone and an image of the harbor and the Statue of Liberty, Snyder says. Snyder says Battery Parks memorials are a way to take in the New York scenery as we remember the lives of veterans who fought and died for our country. Veterans Day is Monday, Nov. 11. Tune in to Fox 5 and MyFoxNY for live coverage of the parade beginning at noon.
