There are very few places in the state that look like they did - TopicsExpress

There are very few places in the state that look like they did over 2,000 years ago. One of them is a little-known area just south of downtown Athens in Clarke county called Rock and Shoals Outcrop Natural Area, a protected space of about 60 acres. I went with daughter Sarah, her husband Ben and my grand-bonus baby Makaya (Ben’s daughter). It is a very interesting landscape - nearly bare granite, topped in scattered hollows with a thin layer of soil or transient pools of water. This natural area features cacti, a number of gnarled cedar trees (most no more than 20’ tall) and patches of gray, green and red lichens, mosses and other low-lying plants. It was very serene and I am glad they have protected it.
