There are well over 500,000 pieces of “space junk” currently orbiting Earth. Over 20,000 of those pieces are larger than 4 inches (10.1 cm) and can be constantly tracked by the Department of Defense. Debris, no matter what size, has the potential to inflict damage on operational satellites. The Phoenix spacecraft will be incredibly sophisticated. Its mission will be to collect pieces of broken satellites, then the robotic arms will salvage any usable parts and recycle them into units that are once again functional. The launch of Phoenix is currently targeted for 2015. More info: bit.ly/17BPNKz Image: DARPA
