There came unto Him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on His head, as He sat at meat. But when His disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste? For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor. ~ Matthew 26:7-9~ The woman knew the value of this ointment; as opposed to putting it in a clay pot, where it could either seep into the clay or evaporate, she kept it in an alabaster box... (I had an alabaster box once... It was a beautiful, smooth white stone...) The scriptures dont say she dipped her fingers in it and anointed Jesus forehead, she POURED it on His head, implying that she emptied the entire contents over His head, until the vessel was empty. Her expensive, precious, valuable ointment... The disciples, seeing only monetary value, got angry, wondering why this woman would waste something so costly, when there were poor people that could have been fed! This is an example of value and worth... And to this woman, Jesus was worth more than that ointment... Every expensive drop! I imagine that as the disciples reprimanded her, she smoothed the ointment through Jesus hair; after all, He WAS eating... She probably wouldnt want to get oil in His food... Maybe humming to herself, mainly because no one elses opinion mattered but the one whose value was worth more than that ointment... And His approval was confirmed in the next 4 verses ( Matthew 26:10-13)... The disciples had been following Jesus but had no idea the value, the worth, of who they had in their midst...
