There has always been something that has amazed me. Ever since I saw the post about the 5th grade mentality this has been on my mind so I am going to ramble on here. Starting in the fall of 1997 I spent eight years with the Lions, including Jacks last five years and since the fall of 2005 I have been with the Tecumseh Braves. I have watched and scouted hundreds of games in the last 17 years. And I have always been utterly amazed at how many times I hear a certain comment directed at Loogootee and Barr-Reeve. And this comment comes from fans, players, coaches, board members, and administrators. And the comment is....We arent going to play that slowdown stuff like Loogootee and Barr-Reeve do, we arent going to play that stall ball.... When I was a junior at Barr-Reeve I heard Joe Todrank make the comment on at least one occasion that we have to start playing basketball the way Jack and the Lions play. Smart, patient, fundamental basketball, dont turn the ball over, emphasizing each possession. And the rest of the story is history. 40 years of success for BR following unprecedented success for Loogootee around 50 years or so. What amazes me is that others arent smart enough to look around and see the success these two schools have enjoyed for a combined nearly 100 years and they refuse to adapt this style. I sit in gyms and I see it all the time, year in and year out. I see stupid play and I dont know how many times I have asked myself What would Butcher think about that? or What would Todrank think about that? You can rest assured that if I do pursue a boys job next spring or summer that this Loogootee and Barr-Reeve mentality, along with the 5th grade approach, will be at the top of my priority list to impress upon the interview board.
