There has been a great deal of buzz lately about the tremendous success of the Finnish education. It is remarkable how much in common it has with the Montessori educational model! Some of the hallmarks of Montessori are just what the Finns are so proud of: * small group instruction and plenty of interaction between students and teachers * inclusion of children with special needs in the classroom and providing them with highly individualized curriculum (in fact, every student in a Montessori classroom has an IEP - individualized educational plan) * minimum standardized testing (just to practice the basic skills of taking such tests) * no homework, just some family projects and emphasis on becoming an all-rounded individual through athletics, art, community service, life skills, etc. I hope this country pays more attention to the profound benefits of Montessori education for students of all abilities -- with special needs or with special gifts.
