There has been a lot of talk about conventions recently by tattooists. Lots of talk of there being so many, or too many. Lots of talk about them not being money spinners any more for the artists. Heres my two penneth. Yes there are loads more conventions now - but there are also loads more convention goers. There has been a massive increase in the proportion of people interested in tattoo in a big way. Not all of these people want to or are able to travel to places like London for the big shows, as great as those shows are. So conventions are a bit like going on tour, taking your music to the masses, though I hate using a rock star analogy. As for making money, conventions have rarely been about that. By the time Ive paid my travel/hotel/booth Im lucky if I break even. But thats fine. Its time out of the studio, without which many of us would go stir crazy. Its an opportunity to watch, discuss and learn. To improve. And I love it, even if it costs me. A beer with friends helps too of course. ;) if you want to earn a few quid, sketch books, prints and flash are the way to do it. Finally I think the benefit of conventions doesnt just lie in immediate gain to the artists involved, nor the organisers. Even if you barely break even, you are advancing tattooing as a whole. Showing the public what great tattoos look like and what they should expect. Raising the bar. And for that I thank you. And so do your all important customers.
