There has been a spate of killings of Hindu Munnani/BJP functionaries in Tamil Nadu, the latest one couple of days back in Chennai. In all cases, the attacks have been gruesome and seem to have followed more or less the same pattern. A group of unknown killers identify a target, wait for the opportune time, then corner the target and kill him using knives, cutting the person into pieces. Then they coolly walk away and escape. Police havent been able to crack a single case so far. In each case, the immediate police reaction is assigning a motive such as land buy/sell, borrowing/lending money, business related quarrel, or that it is about some woman. But it is very clear to see that the issue is something different. It has to do with grassroots activities of Hindu Munnani leaders and the Islamic forces who are opposed to such activities. In October 2013, Panna Ismail, Bilal Malik, Police Fakrudeen and a few others were arrested, and it was claimed that these guys were involved in some of these murders, but the investigation has not proceeded beyond that. If the TN Police do not solve these murders quickly and arrest/punish the responsible culprits, I am afraid there will be retaliatory activities and it will not be good for the state. Political murders have drastically come down in Tamil Nadu and it will be sad to see the state regressing into a chaotic battleground of killings and revenge killings.
