There has been more and more questions lately about pancreas - TopicsExpress

There has been more and more questions lately about pancreas problems on this group and others I belong to. I want to share what happened to me. I have a 10 year old Chessie that comes from a quality/Champion in hunt and show line. I noticed from a past injury he was starting to limp. I went to the vet and we decided to put him on Consequin it has 500 mg of Glucosamine in it, thats great for a dog that is continuing to be very active. When I would leave him in care of some friends to watch while I was a way they would give him his pills, BUT I had 2 people watching him and to my surprise didnt talk with each other. One followed my directions and the other did not. So he was getting twice his normal dose. Over time not knowing this it destroyed his pancreas and he is now Diabetic. Our Vet informed us that while Glucosamine is import for aging dogs if not kept active or the right amount given it can do this. So even though Memphis was from an excellent line his supplements hurt him, that and he at the time was not as active as he was during the summer. Here is the article that my Vet gave me to read and share with others. If you are give this to you pets make sure you are keeping them active as much as possible. Due to his diabetes he is now on a product by Pet Research called Wag its amazing I dont get anything for advertising it but I would definitely look into and try their free trial offer as I did. Hes back to jumping 18ft 4 inches in his last Dockdog event. sciencedaily/releases/2010/10/101027111349.htm
