There have been a lot of positive changes since the 2nd edition of North Carolina Waterfalls. We have 2 new state parks that feature waterfalls and several smaller waterfall sites that are now protected or have public access. The great High Falls of West Fork Tuckasegee River is one of them. You can now hike to the falls from an excellent trail starting near the Lake Glenville dam. However, when the dam was built decades ago, water was diverted to a power plant farther downstream and the river flow over High Falls has been reduced to a trickle. So, while you can hike to the falls, at most times you won’t see much more than a dry cliff. Fortunately, a few years ago, Duke Power started making periodic dam releases, which restore the falls to their historical glory, and in fact cause even more water than usual to flow over them. There are no more releases schedule for 2014; I will post the 2015 schedule as soon as it is available. This is a video Paul Albert shot at one of this year’s releases. You do not want to be on the wrong side of the river when the release begins. Trust me on this, folks! I’ll be talking a lot more about High Falls before the next releases start again in the spring.
