There is Something About Southwest Miami High School... --Paul Hampton Crockett A few weeks ago, after Id pieced together a post briefly touching upon as many of the schools in and around Miami as my lunacy would reasonably allow, the strength of the response took me by surprise. It was quite clear that the bonds, alliances, and allegiances built up in our youth, in many cases, remain very much ours as our journey through life continues. We are now more experienced than innocent, yet the bond remains. And wherever a bond may be found, there is often also opportunity for new, deepened, or refreshed connection with others sharing the same passion. Its kind of like, certain things dont need to be explained. Which is an especially wonderful thing, because if the shared experience were not there, and words cumbersome and awkward the only means of communication at our disposal, wed often give up trying even before wed begun. Here is my point: in the days, and then the weeks following that post, I heard pride expressed by group members in nearly all of the schools, and in some cases saw old connections renewed, or celebrated, in larger or smaller ways. Yet I observed something remarkable, and important. No other school came even close to Southwest Miami High School, in terms of the depth, amount, and force of alumni excitement, sharing, and just connection. Its really no competition here, as I see it, but more a (somewhat mysterious) cause for celebration for us all, because the opportunities we all share for connection are now wider, if accompanied by new challenges all their own (primarily logistical), and in the present tense. I have absolutely no idea why that particular switchboard was lit up brighter than a Christmas tree, maybe even hot to the virtual touch, but I figured it was worth honoring. So Ive gathered a few images of the school in different seasons, and made no special effort to curate, or organize them. Im just putting them out there, for the enjoyment of the schools alumni, and also in the hopes of gaining even a clue as to what was special about Southwest Miami High School, from any who might like to share. Thank you.
