There is a 7:30 meeting tonight at Independence Place. A lot of the community are meeting to find ways to improve the bar. This place is 28 years old. Its the second oldest bar in Cape. ( the Port wins... But its also a restaurant.) its not a fancy place... But its our place. We need to embrace the bar and recall the good times that weve all had there. This bar is more than a bar... Its a safe haven to go to and not worry about getting harassed by some rednecks. Its a place to go to when you have no place else to go, and just be yourself. Young people come from these little small unheard of towns like Grassy and see there are others like themselves... It gives them hope. Walking in ...at some point in the night, you will most likely get several hugs and air kisses from men who look like women... And thats ok, its all part of the charm. I dont know where all the gay people in this town go after they turn 40... But its time they come back. This bar is our own history... Its our stonewall, our something to be proud of, it says WE MATTER! ! To survive here and flourish as long as it has is a testament to the owner and the community, just walking in the door is a slap in the face to all those politicians, preachers, & bigoted people who say we dont have the right... Or that we cant, or are unworthy. This is our home away from home... And yes it may be a little run down, it may be in need of some tender love and care... But anything worth having requires Maintenance, and patronage and love. Put down the phones and the dating apps and recall a time when you remembered that first flirtatious glance across a smokey bar room and all the tangled, tingly feelings that went along with that. The sending a drink over, the fear of the first spoken word, the first slow dance. The press of a strangers cheek next to yours as you try not to sweat...all the time hoping he/she cant feel your rapidly beating heart? This is what the bar has to offer. Its not in your phone. Its real life. Wont you be a part of this life again? Im willing to step up and try... Wont you? After all... This bar, shabby or not, ( sorry Rick) is all we got. Its our place. We need a place thats just ours... A home away from home. A place to lay our hearts when no other place makes us feel welcome, a place thats now taken for granted...by the very community that needs it most. Lets show Cape Girardeau that we are still a community... Lets show the young that we need one another... And as a community we are strong! They havent learned this yet... Its time they did. Please help me, us, & Rick, lets revive this little Mecca and be proud of it... Our little home away from home. IP.
