There is a Sudanese proverb which goes like: Liesa mn Raa Kmn Samia, literally meaning: Who is seeing is not like who is just hearing. In other words no matter how apt a description might be, no matter how graphically painted a picture is and no matter how adept a story teller is, the object or subject of subject of discussion would always be better assessed by the one who sees it himself. Are we prepared to have an African voice to insulate us from over reliance on the western media? To end this burden where it now looks like it is wrong to hear directly from leaders who are being assailed or who are perhaps misunderstood? Is there a real possibility of strengthening organs like AIT in this regard? I was just thinking. When I spoke with Robert Mugabe in 2001, the BBC and VOA ended up quoting from the Nigerian Guardian. Encounters with Tony Blair and Laurent Gbagbo were also at very auspicious times. It is the story yet untold that is the news. Recently it was a pleasure to hear president Omar Al Bashir’s side of the story that we all think we already know.
