There is a conscious effort to culturally appropriate and erase Black art and expression that has been happening for decades. It still manifests today and sees creative industries favour one above another; film, music, fashion, art. But lets look at music - Hip Hop, Jazz, Blues, Soul. The opportunities and accolades get favoured to some while others still have to work 10 times harder just to keep afloat. Azealia Banks breaks it down but be warned, there are words that may offend people. Still, this kind of talk is real, rare and poignant. To solve a problem, we must first recognise the problem. Racism comes in many forms and disguises - some under the label of good intent others under the label of appropriation. It is the level of defiance of the modern day black face that lets us know what contemporary attitudes of superiority inherited by the colonial legacy looks like.
