There is a field just north of me over the tracks that was just harvested Friday. Last spring corn was planted. Typically every ear of corn produces 16 rows of kernels with roughly 400-600 kernels per ear. One seed is all it takes to produce this yield. So to me it would be impossible to know how many kernels you would harvest from an 80 acre field. The number would be huge!! But lets pick a number to make sense of all this Lets just say in 80 acres you can plant 7000 seeds. From that 7000 seeds you will produce at a minimum 2,800,000 new kernels. So this visual should make it obvious why Jesus uses the parable of the seed sower to make his point. If you plant one seed of negativity, lets say gossip. We all just looooooooove gossip. Based on this your one piece of gossip could grow to 400-600 people, and if each of those people plant that seed of hatred, it could spread to do damage to the person aimed at. I know what you are saying, gossip=hatred? YES!!!. But one the other hand if you were to sow seeds of love and friendship could you imagine what joy that would spread? Whats your garden look like? Is it full of weeds with a pile of manure sitting on the edge? Or is your garden one of love, appealing to the eyes, full of a fruit that is sweet to the taste? One of the best parts of that parable is that if your garden is not producing an enticing fruit, you are stuck with this immediate harvest because everything takes time to grow. But if you start right now planting seeds to grow a more pleasant fruit you will eventually harvest the good fruit. So examine your garden. Everyones could use some work. If your harvest is producing hatred then tear up that soil and start replanting new seeds. Pull out those weeds in your life that are causing strife. This Christmas season is the easiest time to replant because people tend to love more this time of year so the soil is softer right now. Reach out and start healing a damaged relationship.
