There is a hierarchy which creates an order to the natural world. Dressage works with the natural order, focusing on the human/horse relationship. When dressage is in harmony with that order there is a delicate balance created which arises without effort. There is never a need to use aggression to support that balance. Aggression is only present when the work is not properly grounded. The order between the horse and human maintains itself, because it is both good and basic. Understanding this allows the educated practitioner to be both very kind and gentle. There is no need to prop up authority and lightness comes from authentic connection. Such dressage is in each of us and in the horse itself but people seek it in the horse world. It cannot be found there. Even an enlightened instructor cannot give it to you. It is found when you open up your heart and slow down. A personal experience and practice of intelligent kindness establishes a kind of wisdom dressage which in which enlightened instruction can take root and grow. Good dressage never forgets its enlightened birth in the heart and mind of the horse and not in human fantasy.
