There is a lot of misleading information coming from some quarters about the Anti Austerity Alliance (AAA) voting against the budget on South Dublin County Council yesterday. Essentially the budget contained a double robbery of the Local Property Tax from working class people. Sinn Féin, Labour and the Greens voted for this robbery, AAA rightly voted against. Below is a link to a statement that gives a fuller explanation. Cllr. Kieran Mahon (Tallaght Central) commented: This budget consolidates and incorporates the Local Property Tax (LPT) austerity robbery from working class people. To add insult to injury, it adds another robbery on top of that. That is a robbery of the LPT revenue by central government. All of the propaganda around the LPT was about the provision of local services, such as playgrounds, libraries and parks. That is now exposed as a total lie. As a result, the AAA proposed a motion to refuse to accept this robbery, by insisting that the central government would pay loans that it previously did pay. This motion was then amended in order to simply request a letter being sent to the government - a completely inadequate response. We then voted against the budget, opposing the double robbery of the LPT.
