There is a lot of pessimism out there anymore concerning the future of the human race. Strictly speaking, this is perfectly justifiable. Just look at the all the wars, at the increasing divorce rates and people in general seeming to have a harder time to form healthy relationships (whether romantic or otherwise). And then we look at what we are doing to the planet with our industrial practices, and with our laziness in dealing with our garbage and so on. Yup, things are looking rather grim. I just finished reading the novelization of Interstellar, it left me even more eager than before to watch the movie. But it also left me somewhat worried about the future of our world. But only a little, though. Why? Because, when it comes right down to it, I dont think were going to let things get so bad as that. I really dont. Why? Humans are a remarkable species, we truly are. No other being on the planet can do all the things we have done. Weve gone to the freakin moon for crying out loud! Weve identified nearly a thousand or more possible Earth-like planets in our stellar neighborhood. Weve built not only terrors, but wonders. Weve worked not only horror, but wonder as well. Weve explored the macrocosm as well the microcosm. There is nothing beyond our reach, we have only to imagine a thing and before long someone will find a way to do that thing or to build that thing (sometimes this is good, sometimes this is horrifying). And we are very stubborn. We have an incredibly powerful survival instinct. Maybe well let the planet go to hell. But I dont feel that we will. Not when push comes to shove. The seeds of change are already there. the Tesla Car and other non-fossil fuel travel technologies. Solar power is really coming into its own now. And other sustainable technologies besides these are coming to the fore. We arent stuck with the world-killing old-world technologies like fossil fuels and so on anymore. We arent stuck with mono-crop/industrial agriculture. Many people are already proving the benefits of a better way. Its only a matter of time before the big money interests have to bow down to these new and innovative ways of doing things. They resist now because to change is to admit they were wrong, and this can be a hard and painful thing to do for anyone. Especially when it means taking a big financial risk on investing a lot of capitol into changing their business models. We are steadily approaching a turning point. It is just over the horizon. We will, as a species, have a decision to make. Do we continue as we have been and face near certain extinction? Or do we do the hard thing, the painful thing? Do we change? And the thing is, we are already making that decision. Every person who chooses a hybrid or all electric car, or at least a standard car with very good fuel economy, every person who buys organic, every person who has solar installed on their home, every little decision of this general nature is a step toward choosing survival for the human race and for Earth-based life in general. It is hard to see the reasons to be optimistic right now. I know. I remain optimistic because while I struggle with believing in myself, I have always had a rock-solid belief in humanity. We have the chance to build a beautiful world for future generations. Let us not waste that chance.
