There is a myth about a man standing before God with the devil’s advocate next to him. The advocate explained to God that the devil had used two of his most powerful tools on the man, pride and distraction. The man protested greatly saying he was both humble and focused. He explained to God how he had known as child he should be a corporate executive and worked very hard in college. He had gone to business school and graduated at the top of his class and worked for several Fortune 100 companies. He had written several books on business and used his skills for his church many times. He had started nonprofit organizations and created a scholarship foundation. He had also tithed over 10% regularly without letting anyone know and prayed nightly asking forgiveness for even the sins he did not know about. The advocate replied with only one statement. He said “The tools seemed to have worked perfectly”. Are there things in your life that you see as an achievement that God might see as a distraction? Are there things in your life that you think make you humble that God might see as pride?
