There is a necessary ritual I must do before picking up my guitar. The impulse is there, but to have a satisfactory experience and not look at the guitar with guilt for not playing it, I must take a moment or so to clarify my thoughts and open myself up to the exploration of the instrument. As a writer, I dont wait for inspiration, but for playing and singing I have to breathe a bit and be receptive to where the music in me will lead. I have low light in the living room. Everyone is asleep. I am listening to music that has predominantly acoustic guitar in it. I have a few flutes of sparkling wine in me but that isnt necessary. What is needed is the openness to experience joy and the curiosity to go where the notes lead me. I am hopelessly happy in this moment and there are songs in my heart, not just in my mouth.
