There is a public meeting tonight at the Karuk Community Hall in Orleans at 6 p.m. for the Butler Fire. Incident Summary: Fire managers have developed a strategic operations plan that will assist in the short-term and long-term management of the Butler Fire. Fire managers continue to monitor and adjust strategies for the Butler Fire as fire and weather conditions evolve. Incident Commander Mike Minton stated two of the biggest challenges for Butler Fire firefighters are the steep terrain and weather conditions such as the recent high temperatures and low relative humidities. “This is a tough piece of ground and there has been some incredible work done out there,” Minton said. Firefighters continue to patrol for spot fires across the Salmon River Road, and mop up hot spots within 50-feet of the fire’s eastern containment line. In the McNeal Creek, Knownothing Ridge and Orleans Mountain areas, firefighters will continue their efforts to keep the fire in check. Above the Butler Creek area, crews will continue indirect line construction as the fire continues to advance towards current control lines near Orleans Lookout. Firefighters will maintain a presence amid the structures along the Salmon River Road corridor. Fire Behavior and Environmental Conditions: A Fire Weather Watch for possible thunderstorms is in effect this evening through Wednesday, 11 p.m., due to potential lightning combined with dry fuel conditions. This could result in increased fire activity and spread. Additional local fire weather related information is available from the National Weather Service – Eureka Office at: wrh.noaa.gov/eka/.
