There is a push in the US to have such tragic deaths recorded as On Duty. Although it doesnt help prevent it, it at least acknowledges some level of ownership, and provides the families with full benefits. Many places will NOT diagnose PTSD as it is often a career worth of trauma and not a single event, and even less spoken, is that often the unbearable trauma is caused by the politics and attitudes of the line management and not what most people expect.
