There is an interesting reason why Microsoft skipped Windows 9. Majority of third party apps (including games) supports Win XP and above but not OS below Win XP. The apps uses the following code to recognise an OS. if(version.StartsWith(Windows 9)) { /* 95 and 98 */ } else { So, the code means if the name of the OS starts with Windows 9, the OS is either Windows 95 or 98. Before installing, most third party apps check the OS first before you could proceed and because of that code used to recognise the OS , it will give a message like this (example) APP NOT COMPATIBLE WITH CURRENT OS, REQUIRES WIN XP AND ABOVE and hence you will be unable to install most third party app. So, to avoid compatibility issues Microsoft decided to name the upcoming OS as Windows 10.
