There is no doubt that central and east London are being socially cleansed of the poor. Boris Johnson announced a few weeks ago how the aesthetic quality of the streets of London would be transformed by tearing down old social housing. It wont be possible to do that with sitting tenants, so you need a way to get them out first. Other comments such as city centre living is a privilege that must be earned illustrate very clearly what the direction of travel of policy is. I have friends in the USA who commute 400 miles every weekday because they cannot afford to live any closer to Manhattan, where they work. HS2 is needed, in part, because Birmingham will become a dormitory city by 2050 if London continues to grow at the rate it is now at the expense of everywhere else. East London families are already being rehoused in Birmingham, so this is not science fiction by any means.
