There is no doubt that the Hijab observed by the Muslim woman is one of the most controversial and debated issues in the West. And we’re all familiar with the opinions expressed within the media, politics of the world and among women’s rights movement etc. The hijab in islam is not just a piece of cloth that we wear on our heads, it is a declaration of our faith and one of the main cornerstones of the Islamic social system. Living in this society, this is no question a hard task but more and more sisters are wearing the hijab and jilbab alhamdulilah. So what’s the problem? There seems to be growing trend where sisters are walking around with a new wave of questionable hijab styles. This made us wonder just how much do we understand what hijab really is and why is it that we wear the hijab, and what statement are we making? Is it a matter of choice for some? Are we oppressed? Is it fashion? Or is it just pure and simply an obligation to Allah (swt)? Allah swt says: "… let them draw their head-coverings (khumur) over their necks and bosoms (juyub)." [An-Nur 31] Hadith "When a young girl begins to menstruate, it is not correct that anything should be seen of her except her face and hands up to the wrist.” (Hadith Reported by Abu Dawud) “Oh Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks (Jalabeeb) all over their bodies." [Al-Ahzab:59]
